Bike Rides for the energetic
Not for the faint hearted Graded ‘severe’, this route should only be attempted by the experienced mountain biker with their own bike and equipment. The route starts at the hotel and follows the main High Street ridge running North to South and reaching a height of 2719ft via Hayes Water and Knott.
It then heads North along the course of an old Roman road, gradually descending for 5miles until Loadpot Hill is reached. The return leg is made along a bridgeway skirting the shores of Ullswater.
Brilliant scenery but hard From Glenridding or Patterdale, follow the route up the A592 to Silverpoint.
From Silver Point, continue to follow the lake shore, negotiating boulders and flights of steps on a path that was never designed for cycling. Eventually this reaches a metalled road at Sandwick. Turn right here.
Keep right at the T-junction (signed “Patterdale”) and follow the lane up Boredale. A Bridleway climbs to Boardale Hause – not too bad at first, but it gets really nasty near the top. Cross the pass and EITHER; slant right on the frustratingly awkward descent back to Rooking, OR; slant left on the easier and much more enjoyable descent to Bridgend, following gates/signs across the fields at the bottom to reach the main road.
